This year the 6th, 7th and 8th grade science classes will be focusing on the NGSS Phenomena Based learning standards in Earth, Physical and Life sciences respectively.
One of the first words children learn is “Why?”
The National Science Standards have been designed to be phenomena based instead of just fact based so children can again ask “Why” as the real goal of science is to explain and understand how different “phenomena” occur in the natural world.
This will create more connections between topics for students to be able to master and build on information under various units of study, to understand the importance of why we look at so many different topics and to see how each of those topics has a real impact on the world in which they live.
We will be doing more activity based assessment; completion of lab/activity sheets will be very important to their grading [some of these will be virtual or simulated and most will be online].
Attendance and organization will also have a large impact on their performance as they need to be present for the activities and discussions in order to receive credit.
Online activities and simulations will be linked to Google classroom, their online textbook as well as other electronic resources and will be included in their assessment. [The days of mostly pen and paper have moved on……Awesome news for the trees!]
[If at any point in time there is a problem with home internet, please contact me so arrangements can be made for students to complete their online assignments at school or make other temporary accommodations.]
